Punching Shear RectificationPunching shear is a result of insufficient slab thickness local to a column and/or insufficient shear reinforcement placement. In existing buildings it is typified by cracks in the topside of the structural slab and, in serious situations, as localised upwards deflection of the slab at transfer column locations i.e. the column attempting to “punch” through the slab. The failure mechanism is the slab slides down the columns ( like the Twin Towers in New York).
Design of additional external reinforcement in Qld can only be carried out by a RPEQ Engineer.
